Treat Reykjavík as a destination as well as a possible base for excursions. Spend time with its museums, harbour and streets before deciding how much of a short break belongs on the road.
Four days with a weather alternative
Use arrival day for a short walk and settling in. Give day two to a museum and the harbour. Keep another day for one chosen excursion if conditions and logistics suit, then leave your final morning close to the city and your departure arrangements.
Choose a museum for context
The city offers art, history and other collections with different locations. Check the current exhibition and opening information before buying admission. Compare a city card with the actual museums and transport you will use during its validity.
Price the longer journeys
Include airport transfers and excursion pickup arrangements in the full cost. A long day trip can take most of the available daylight in some seasons. Read the duration, included equipment, cancellation policy and return arrangements before booking.
Keep natural experiences conditional
Northern lights, wildlife and outdoor access depend on conditions; a booking does not guarantee a sighting. Follow current official weather, road and local safety information for any excursion. Keep an indoor city plan so the holiday does not depend on one forecast.
