Build Porto around the Douro and the streets above it. A riverside afternoon, an old-town day and one chosen cultural visit make a short break with room to pause.
Three days along the Douro
Begin at Praça da Ribeira and follow the waterfront without filling your arrival day with appointments. Explore the historic centre on day two, allowing extra time for slopes and steps. Keep the final day for a museum or a separately planned river experience.
Choose a useful base
Compare the walking gradient as well as the distance from your accommodation to the river. A room above the waterfront may involve repeated climbs. Ask about lifts and entrance steps, then check the onward journey from your arrival station or airport.
Spend selectively
Make neighbourhood walks the backbone of your visit and choose one paid experience for depth. For a river trip, compare its actual duration, boarding point and cancellation policy. A view from the riverbank can be worthwhile without adding another ticket.
Weather and onward trips
Keep an indoor alternative for a wet afternoon. If you want the wider Douro Valley, give it a separate day and check the return journey before booking; it is a different outing from a short city cruise.
