Choose Madrid for an art-led break with plenty of time outdoors. Pair one museum with a neighbourhood walk, then spend another afternoon in the city’s parks and squares.
Three days with room to look
Settle in with a walk around the central squares on arrival. Dedicate day two to the art collection that interests you most, leaving the afternoon flexible. Use the third for Retiro and another neighbourhood rather than adding a distant excursion.
Select the right museum
Read current exhibition and permanent-collection information before buying admission. Check the ticket’s date, time and inclusions directly with the museum. Compare any pass with the visits you will genuinely make, including opening days.
Make a practical base
Compare hotel access to the arrival station and the places you want to visit. Madrid’s scale makes a convenient public-transport link useful even for a walk-led itinerary. Add luggage, local charges and the complete room cost to your budget.
Keep the season in mind
Plan shaded breaks in hot weather and an indoor alternative for wet days. Choose ordinary weekdays if flexibility matters more than a particular event. Avoid assuming a cheap flight means the full weekend will be inexpensive.
