Choose Edinburgh for atmosphere, history and seasonal celebrations. Keep the old-town hills manageable and give a festival evening room in the itinerary.
A three-day outline
Begin with a short Old Town walk and time to settle in. On day two, choose your main historic visit and leave room for a viewpoint if conditions suit. Keep a third day for the New Town, galleries or a slower neighbourhood route.
Book dates deliberately
Compare ordinary midweek breaks with Christmas and New Year dates. A low travel fare can be outweighed by peak accommodation costs. Price rail and air journeys door to door, including luggage, transfers and the time you arrive.
Hogmanay planning
The official city tourism listing gives 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. The programme contains separate events with their own tickets and entry rules. Decide which celebration you want before choosing your base and transport home.
Weather and access
Build a wet-weather alternative into every outdoor-heavy day. Check steps and gradients on your intended route, and ask venues about access. For late festival evenings, check transport arrangements and meeting points directly before travelling.
